The club programme of events for 2021 has now been decided

You can see the full calendar of the Evening 10 series here-

You can see which events will be used to decide club champions here-

Evening 10 on 9 April is on (hopefully).

The course has been checked this afternoon and all obstacles apart from some potholes have gone. So unless the weather prohibits or something unexpected happens we are good to go tomorrow.

Everybody welcome but if we get too many, Becontree members will have priority.

Our Covid requirements will be strictly observed.

If you rode one of our events in 2020 and still have our body number please bring it with you. You will keep it for the whole of this season.

Try to ride one lap of the course in advance to familiarise yourself with it.

You'll get a free ride tomorrow.

Hope to see you, come prepared and stay safe.

Evening 10 on 2 April cancelled.

Traffic lights have appeared in the course, just before the first turn. It seems that the water company are digging the road up.

The work is only scheduled for this weekend so we hope to go again next week. However, check this page before leaving home.

Resumption of racing 2021.

Permission has now been given to resume racing so our first event will be the Friday evening 10 mile TT on the Navestock course on 2 April

All are welcome to join us and we will not be charging an entry fee for this first event. However, we are limited to 40 riders so if that is exceeded, priority will be given to Becontree Members.

The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic mean that we will have to organise the events in the way we did in 2020. Full details of how this will operate are contained in our guidance note which you must read carefully before travelling to Navestock.

In particular we ask you to observe the following-

Failur to comply will result in refusal of entry or disqualifacation.

If we all use our common sense, we will all get to have a good time and stay safe. So please bear with us as we iron-out any hitches.

In addition we recommend you ride round the course in the days before you ride for the first time so you are familar with any surface defects.

Any changes to arrangements or cancellations will be advertised on this page so please check before you leave home to avoid a wasted journey.

Hill Climb 2020.

Although all club championships for 2020 have been suspended, riders will have an opportunity for a bit of competition and a chance to meet up at the ELV Hill Climb on Sunday 4 October.

Special arrangements have been made to comply with Covid-19 regulations and all details are shown on the ELV web site.

So come along next week to have a rare opportunity for us to meet up in the fresh October air.

Evening 10 series 2020.

Once permission was given to resume racing we were able to promote 6 of our 7 remaining evening 10's. Unfortunately bad weather meant we had to abandon the one scheduled for 28 August.

For the 6 events we had a total of 93 riders, drawn from club members and guests.

We would like to thank all those who joined in and invite everybody to ride with us in 2021 when the first event will be on 2 April.

In particular we ask you to observe the following-

Club membership

In recent years the club has been able to cover costs through the money taken for rides in the Navestock evening 10 series. However, as many of you will know, road works and other factors resulted in the cancellation of all but a small number of the events in 2019. As a consequence the funds have been depleted considerably to the extent we will now have to ask members to pay the standard membership fee of £15 for 2020.

Can we now ask you contact Gary Tyrrell, the club General Secretary to make arrangements for payment. Gary can be contacted by clicking here.

AGM and Prize presentation

The club AGM and prize presentation was held at Gary's house on Sunday, 25 November 2018.

The committee was re-elected unchanged other than Paul King's name was removed as he has moved away from the area.

Club promotions for 2019 were approved. The committee will consider what novelty events will be held within the Evening 10 series in due course.

There was a feeling that the Athlete's 10 rules required tightening to maintain the sprit of the event. It was decided that-

It was reported that as some people are no longer routinely carrying cash it will be helpful if a facility which will allow electronic fund transfer could be implemented. The Treasurer will investigate.

Timekeeping will likely cause a problem in 2019 as Derek Damant's availability will be severly restricted and cover will be needed for Arthur's absences. It might be necessary to ask individual riders to take turns to time an event or two. This in itself will require at least some training and familiarisation. The committee will consider how this can operate over the next few months prior to the first event in April. Matt Osborn will investigate the possible availability of technological solutions to provide timing back-up .

Club championships for 2019 will be decided by the committee when the local CCT handbook is available.

The treasurer reported that expenditure for 2018 had exceeded income and members should be asked to pay a membership fee for 2019. It was decided that the full amount will not be required so the fee will be capped at £10 per member for the year.

Trophies and medals were presented to the 2018 champions after the main meeting.

BWCC Data protection policy.

You may have heard about the new General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR"), either through emails you’ve received or via the press or television. If you are interested in knowing what GDPR is please visit the EU site.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaces the 1995 Data Protection Directive which was seen as being outmoded in the present technological society.

To comply with GDPR requirements BWCC has produced a data protection policy. Basically, this policy outlines all the things which we already do, but has now formalised them. This will in no way change the way the club is run or your interaction with the club and its officials. Please be reassured about this.

The club's privacy policy can be found here.

Essex Trophy

Long-time Becontree menber, Brian Moran has plans to bring high quality elite racing to Essex.

Brian organised the Essex Trophy race from 1973 to 1983 and now wishes to resurrect the event as part of a festival of cycling on St. Georges day 2019.

Those of you who saw the Tour de France on its journey through Essex will know what a great spectical this type of event will be. Those of you who know Brian will be aware of his undoubted ability to create a spectacular event.

Brian's plans are well advanced. Now all that is needed are the funds. You can help with this by pledging a small amount towards the final goal. Go to https://www.spacehive.com/essex-trophy-cycle-race to see more details and how you can help.

Charity ride

Chelmsford’s annual cycle ride, Pedal for The J’s, is returning to the city on Sunday 15th April.

It is the ninth year of this busy event which is popular with cyclists across Essex and raises money for The J’s Hospice charity.

There is a choice of three circular rides - 15, 35 and 50 miles - through the beautiful Essex countryside, all starting and finishing at Admirals Park.

The event attracts a wide range of people, from novice cyclists through to experienced teams from cycling clubs and this year there will also be cycling activities for children in the park.

The J’s Hospice specialises in caring for young adults aged 16-40 with rare and complex long-term conditions in the comfort of their own homes. Our aim is to encourage them to live life to the full, however short.

“Since being terminally ill and under The J's, they have made my life easier, helping in every way possible, making it stress free, allowing me to make memories with family and friends.“

Quote from a J’s Hospice patient

The club bank account has now been accessed and in operation. The Treasurer was not able to attend the meeting but will be asked to provide a statement of the club's finances as soon as possible.

The club had sufficient funds to conduct its business in 2017 but with the decline in numbers entering the evening 10 series it was decided that the fee for those events in 2018 will revert to £4 per ride for all entrants except for young riders who will continue to pay £3.

Trophies and medals were presented to the 2017 champions after the main meeting.

Accredited Marshals

British Cycling is running accredited marshals courses. Full details are shown below. If you are interested, please apply direct.

Accredited Marshals are now becoming the one of the most important people involved in running road racing in the region and without them events would not exist.

In the Eastern region we have operated the scheme for the last 10 years in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex and it has been very successful, with Cambridgeshire joining last year and hopefully Hertfordshire coming on board in 2018 it will mean that we are the first region to have 100% coverage for all BC events on the road, currently we have a group of about 110 people who carry out the duties and are very experienced so anyone new coming into the role will always have the backing of a good team.

To qualify as an Accredited Marshal we ask that people attend a course which takes about 4 hours and after they cover 5 races in the year, at these events we will pair up the new people with an experienced Marshal who can guide them through their duties and if everyone is happy they become a fully trained Accredited Marshal once they have completed their 5 events.

British Cycling provide volunteers with a free Bronze Membership, all the equipment and clothing necessary, the courses are free of charge and when attending races pay expenses at 20p per mile with the added bonus that there is usually always a good cup of tea and cake waiting for them.

I have included a link to the BC web site showing you all a bit more about being an Accredited Marshal.

Rescheduled Heffer Memorial TT

The Heffer Memorial 14 mile Time Trial will now be held on Thursday 29 June.

The event will be incorporated within Basildon CC's club Time Trial held on that night so you should ask the organiser of that event for a ride.

The course will be the same 7 mile circuit round North Ockendon that we normally use, ridden twice but with a different start/finish.

The Basildon cc start their event from the entrance to the railway station car park in West Horndon.

They have an arrangement with the industrial Park that is directly opposite the railway station entrance that riders can park in their car park BUT on no account are riders to cycle to / from their cars to the road. Riders MUST walk from their car pushing their bike to the road and dismount then walk back to the car at the end of the event. If this rule is broken it may well jeopardise the Basildon's parking arrangement. (Signing on also takes place in the car park.) The railway station entrance is on Station Road right by the railway bridge which leads onto Saint Mary's Lane.

This event is the club's oldest competition and two of our oldest and most prestigeous trophies ( for the winner and first handicap) are up for grabs.

Club championships for 2017 will be decided by the committee when the local CCT handbook is available.

The club bank account has now been accessed and the treasurer will produce an account to show the club's assets.

The club has sufficient funds to conduct its business in 2017 so does not need to collect full annual subscriptions from existing members. However it is a legal requirement for a member to give some financial consideration. The treasurer will therefore compile a list of members to collect £1 from each as the year progresses.

Trophies and medals were presented to the 2016 champions after the main meeting. This included the Clubman of the Year trophy which went to Jim Bromley senior in recognition of his efforts to represent the club in all types of competition including representing Great Britain in Australia at the UCI Amateur world championships.

Navestock evening 10 series

Resurfacing work on Shonks Mill Road and Murthering Lane has made both the E14a/10 and E14/17k unsuitable for racing so we have unfortnately had to cancel the event scheduled for 20 May.

We will survey the courses again next week so check this site for updates before setting out.

In view of the change of courses this year we have decided to postpone the "Fixed" event scheduled for 20 May. A new date will be announced as soon as possible.

Course - E14/17k based on Navestockside Essex.

Our usual course based on Navestock Heath has become unsafe owing to defects in the surface. Until that is restored, we will be using course E14/17k based on Navestockside. The course will be signposted but riders will be responsible for finding their own way round. We recommend that anybody not familar with the course should make a trial run before riding for the first time.

Full details of the course can be found here.
